The US is one of the largest producers and consumers of energy in the world. Crude oil plays a major role in the country’s energy sector followed by coal and natural gas. The country’s dependency on the energy imports is increasing as the domestic production levels of various energy commodities, except natural gas, are declining rapidly.

Oil is the largest contributor in total energy consumption in the US accounting for over 36.6%. Natural gas and coal are at comparable levels accounting for 23.4% and 22.1% respectively. Renewable Energy accounted 0.4% while electricity accounted for 17.5% of the total energy consumed in 2009.
