The coming up of the new President Berdimuhamedow into power in early 2008 has sparked a new interest to the foreign investors in the oil and gas sector of the country. With the new president opening up the sector to the outside world, the major world countries including Russia, China, the US and Europe have started competing for access into the country’s vast energy reserves. Turkmenistan has considerable amount of oil, however, its natural gas reserves are one of the largest natural gas reserves in the world.

Natural gas plays a major role in the country’s total primary energy consumption accounting to approximately 77%. The rest of the energy is supplied by oil accounting for about 23% of the total energy consumed.
