Colombia has significant energy resources and potential for future development. The country is a net exporter of petroleum and an important producer of high quality coal. Colombia relies on hydroelectricity for bulk of its electricity needs, thus, enabling the country to export the produced coal. The country is one of the largest coal exporters in the world.

Oil and hydro are the largest source of primary energy in Colombia accounting for about 35% and 32% of the energy consumption respectively during 2009. Natural gas accounts for about 26% while coal accounts for nearly 8% of the energy consumption in the country.
