Brazil is the world’s seventh largest consumer of energy with consumption of about 2.1% of world’s total energy. Historically, Brazil has been a net crude oil importer. However the increasing domestic oil production will allow the country to be self-sufficient by 2011 and emerge as a major oil exporter in the future.

Brazil’s dependency on renewable sources increased in recent years. The country’s energy generation from renewable sources includes hydropower generation and ethanol production from sugarcane. Brazil is the second largest producer of ethanol in the world.
