Algeria is a major hydrocarbon exporter and is a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Hydrocarbons play a major role in the country’s economy accounting for 46% of the GDP. The hydrocarbon sector in Algeria accounts for about 98% of the revenues. The country is the second largest gas exporter to the EU-25 with over 18% of the total EU-25 gas imports.

Natural gas dominates Algeria’s energy sector. It was the largest source of energy consumption in Algeria accounting for over 59% of the energy consumed in 2009, followed by crude oil at 38.6%, coal at around 2.0% and hydro at 0.3%.
